The beginnings of Kozala Cemetery

The beginnings of Kozala cemetery date back to 1781, when the first purchase of land was made for the needs of arranging a cemetery outside the city.

In 1793, a larger plot of land was bought - an abandoned vineyard owned by the Augustinians, and as the needs grew, the purchase of the land continued, until December 1, 1838, with the blessing of the "land of eternal peace", the cemetery was officially opened and handed over to the people of Rijeka for use.

Funeral Regulations

Since the summer of 1871, the cemetery has had a guard whose task, among other things, was to keep the Book of Burials (Libro di Registro) from January 1, 1872, as directed in the Funeral Regulations written according to the instructions of the city's chief physician - Primarius Dr. Francesco Gelcich. It is prescribed to keep records based on valid documents on death. Graves must be marked with a stone plaque, whose implementation, approved by the city administration, is attached to the guard for inspection. All graves must adhere to the neatly delineated burial lines in the cemetery according to the general arrangement of the cemetery of which the civil engineer Antonio Deseppi has been in charge of since 1872.

Chapel of St. Mihael

The entrance complex of the cemetery, the chapel of St. Mihael, was destroyed during the bombing of Rijeka in II. world war.
